Editorial: In this edition of the Panel Secretariat newsletter, we would like to encourage juvenile justice actors to use international human rights mechanisms to support child rights advocacy and reform efforts.
At the 47th Session of the Committee on the Rights of the Child which ended early this month, the Committee considered the reports of the Dominican Republic and Timor Leste. In its Concluding Observations, the Committee made strong recommendations on the administration of juvenile justice and encouraged State parties to seek technical assistance from the Panel. We encourage actors working in these countries to follow-up on the Committee’s recommendations and use them as tools for reform. In the coming weeks, the 7th session of the Human Rights Council, from 7-23 March 2008, will present new opportunities for advocacy work on juvenile justice at the international level. We encourage governments and advocates to seize this opportunity to mainstream children’s rights at the Council and give a higher profile to the plight of children in conflict with the law.
