1. Editorial:
On 12th August 2010, the United Nations launched the International Year of Youth in accordance with a resolution adopted by the General Assembly in December 2009. After a first edition on the theme of Participation, Development and Peace in 1985, the 2010 edition will focus on Dialogue and Mutual Understanding.
The objective of this International Year of Youth is to:
• Support investment and commitment in youth;
• Encourage youth participation in decision-making processes and political projects ;
• Increase recognition of youth contribution to social development, including the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) ;
• Better understand young people’s expectations and needs.
Many events, conferences and workshops will take place all year long and around the world in order to promote dialogue and exchanges between cultures and generations.
If we think about juvenile justice in a perspective of participation, we realise that many efforts can still be made so that children in conflict with the law and child victims and witnesses of crimes are considered as full actors in the judicial procedures. The right to be heard but also the rights to be understood and to be treated with dignity must imperatively be respected.
