1. Editorial:

In this edition of the newsletter, we would like to highlight the work undertaken by Panel members to raise child justice issues at the 18th session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) in Vienna, Austria, from 16-24 April 2009.

On 21 April, the Panel Secretariat, in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Defence for Children International (DCI) and Penal Reform International (PRI) held a side-event on “Crime Prevention for Children: Developments and Good Practices”. The discussion aimed to encourage collaboration between governments, civil society and criminal justice agencies to prevent children from coming into conflict with the law. Speakers provided examples of programmes, underlining lessons learned and good practices that uphold child rights. A full report is available below.

The Panel Secretariat also delivered an oral statement on child justice on behalf of nine Panel members, regarding coordination in technical advice and assistance, reform issues for the 12th Crime Congress in 2010 and input to the thematic debate on prison overcrowding. Read the statement below.

We would also like to highlight the report of the United Nations Secretary General on child justice reform that provides an overview of the work of the Panel and its members. See the report below.

Finally, we encourage Member States to adopt the CCPCJ’s resolution on this theme at the next session of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) (see the resolution).
