1. Editorial:

The Secretariat of the Interagency Panel on Juvenile Justice (IPJJ) would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year 2009! We would also like to thank all the Panel members for their good collaboration throughout the year and their dedication to upholding children’s rights in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international norms and standards.

We would also like to take this opportunity to flag the compilation the Panel Secretariat has prepared of all the Committee on the Rights of the Child Concluding Observations made in 2008 that relate to justice for children, including the administration of juvenile justice and the treatment of child victims and witnesses of crimes. The compilation is available in English, French and Spanish and includes recommendations on the following countries: Bhutan, Bulgaria, Djibouti, the Dominican Republic, Eritrea, Georgia, the Republic of Serbia, Sierra Leone, Timor Leste and the United Kingdom.

The Committee, in many of these recommendations, makes direct reference to the Panel and requests State parties to “seek technical assistance and other cooperation from the United Nations Interagency Panel on Juvenile Justice, which includes UNODC, UNICEF, OHCHR and NGOs.” We encourage our members to follow-up on the Committee’s Concluding Observations and to coordinate with each other at country level if any action is taken.
