The Final Statement of DCI’s Conference on “Ending Violence against Children in Justice Systems: From Words to Action” (Brussels, Belgium, 1-3 October 2008) recalls some important words of its keynote speaker Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, the independent expert and author of the UN Study on Violence against Children. The statement also presents civil society actions identified by participants to engage in the follow-up to the Study. - “Children as Victims and Witnesses. A Question of Law…and of Rights! – Recommendations of the Participants” (International Institute on The Rights of the Child - IDE) (EN): The International Institute for the Rights of the child, organizer of the international seminar which took place in Sion, Switzerland, on 14-18 October 2008, issued a document with 21 recommendations developed by the seminar’s participants to ensure the respect of the rights of child victims and witnesses of crimes. Recommendations include ensuring effective and adequate participation mechanisms and appropriate awareness-raising and training of professionals on the special needs of these children. - “Conclusions. III IJJO International Conference: “Juvenile Justice Systems in Europe: current situation, trends in applicable models and good practices” (International Juvenile Justice Observatory - IJJO) (EN FR SP): The conclusions of the International Conference organized by the IJJO in Valencia on 21-22 October 2008 brought forth 10 important recommendations on juvenile justice systems. The recommendations include (among others) the development of common criteria for research, the promotion of alternative intervention methods and sanctions, and quality training of professionals.
