Interagency Panel on Juvenile Justice (IPJJ) Newsletter Nr. 8, July 2008
In this edition of the Panel Secretariat Newsletter, we would like to inform you that at the Panel’s Annual Meeting which took place on 9-10 July 2008 in Geneva, Switzerland, the members decided to adopt a broader approach to justice issues, covering both children in conflict with the law and children victims and witnesses of crimes. This approach aims to ensure that all children who come into contact with the justice system have their rights respected, protected and fulfilled, in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international norms and standards, including the United Nations Guidelines on Justice in Matters Involving Child Victims and Witnesses of Crimes (2005). In this respect, we would like to highlight a forthcoming seminar on the rights of child victims and witnesses of crimes organised by the International Institute for the Rights of the Child (IDE) in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre and the International Bureau for Children’s Rights (IBCR):
The Secretariat would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) as a new member of the Panel. UNICRI is a UN body based in Turin, Italy, with long-standing experience in judicial and juvenile justice reform. For further information on UNICRI, please see: http://www.unicri.it/
This brings the Panel’s membership to fourteen organisations, including both UN bodies and non-governmental organisations, active in juvenile justice: Committee on the Rights of the Child; Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR); United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO); United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI);
